Back when I was starting Jiu-Jitsu, it was very hard to find the knowledge you needed to become a World Champion.

I was twenty years old when I moved alone to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to train in Oswaldo Alves’s gym in 2002 – after some years of full-time dedication!
Little did my professor know, I was living in the gym at weekends, surviving off little more than watermelon and (when I could get it), ice cream!
(The ice cream was for the calories. Back then I knew a lot less about nutrition than I know now!)
The only money I had came from a small sponsorship from a successful local businessman…
Everything I had went into my training and survival!
I used to be locked in the gym over the weekend, with no company apart from the creepy caretaker…
(To this day, he reminds me of Michael Myers from the Halloween movies!)
I was receiving world-class instruction and training with a high-level team.
Over that year, I broke through so many mental barriers…
I knew the guys I was fighting didn’t want to win as badly as I did.
They weren’t sleeping in a gym on weekend nights…
They weren’t trying to make a watermelon last for a weekend…
They weren’t trying to increase their calorie intake with the cheapest, fattiest foods they could find just to survive!
And there was something else that separated me from my competition too…
My desire to seek knowledge with an open heart and an open mind.
I was putting myself through so much sacrifice for this very reason…
I wanted to know more than everyone else, I wanted to fill my mind and my brain with all the possible techniques and sequences possible…
And guess what…
At Blue Belt!
That same year, I won a Purple Belt World Championship (Double Gold!)… All by submission!
A year after that, I won a Brown Belt World Championship (also Double Gold) – 10 fights, 9 by submission…
Throughout my career, I would go on to win 15 Black Belt World titles from the most prestigious federations:
(6X IBJJF World Championships, 6X ADCC World Championships** and 3X UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro Championships…)
**4x ADCC SuperFight Champion defeating 4 ADCC Absolute Champions back-to-back.

I wanted to lead and mentor new champions from Team Atos.
For years, I’d been trying to juggle coaching duties and competition, but this was draining me.
I can only give so much as a professor when I was competing at the same time.
But the investment in my team has been paying off…
